The Big Island. The Healing Island. This is Hawai'i
Island. There actually is such a place, it isn't a mistake. The island of Hawai'i
is the largest island in the state of Hawaii, more than twice the size of all of
the other Hawaiian islands combined and growing all the time! Only the Big Island
has active, flowing volcanoes that create new Earth as they live. It isn't like
Oahu, it isn't like Maui or Kaua'i.
On the Kona/Kohala Coast, the west side of the island, you'll find plenty of tourist
activities, beaches and golf just as on any other island in Hawaii. But head for
the Hamakua Coast on the island's east side and you'll see the last of Old Hawaii,
still unspoiled by rampant tourism over-development. There you can still find acres
of unbroken meadows, rustling waterfalls and windswept forests.
